Why would anyone need a review of a holiday ornament before deciding whether or not to buy one?!
The truth is, a lot of holiday ornaments may seem cool for the first moment one hears about them, but when one looks into the substance of the ornament, well, it turns out to be less than what a fan might want. With the cost of ornaments rising, I found it especially valuable to review holiday ornaments and give people a buying guide for their holiday shopping!
Before you check out the reviews, I heartily recommend understanding how I review in general. While all of the ornament reviews are in my blog, W.L. Swarts Reviews The Universe, as is my overall standard - My Reviewing Philosophy - I figured I'd take a moment to run through my criteria for how I review holiday ornaments.
All holiday ornaments I encounter are evaluated on a ten point scale where 0 (zero) is absolutely abominable through 10 (perfection, your tree is not complete until you hang this ornament on it!). I start at zero and ornaments work their way up to ten. What are the criteria I grade on? Here are the standards:
3 points - Sculpt/Coloring - Does the ornament look like what it is supposed to? Is the coloring good? Does any difference between the image on the package and on the ornament itself make sense?
3 points - Balance - When hung properly, does the ornament hang level, in a way that makes sense for the subject?
3 points - Effects - Does the ornament have a light or sound effect? Is it audible/bright? Is the effect right for the ornament?
1 point - Collectibility - Is the value of the ornament going to hold up over the years?
These might seem like pretty strict standards for ornaments, but with collectible ornaments reaching into the $30 range, an informed consumer is a smart consumer!
